About Us

OUR BEGINNING
Greenbackville was settled in 1867, along the shores of the beautiful Chincoteague Bay, located in the far northeastern corner of Accomack County, Virginia. The town is uniquely situated on the Maryland/Virginia border. During January 1956, disastrous fires destroyed two homes and one business in Greenbackville. A town meeting was held on the evening of February 14, 1956 in the former High School building for the said purpose of organizing a fire company. During the meeting $1,000.00 was pledged towards the purchase of a fire engine and temporary officers were elected. Thus, the Greenbackville Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. was duly organized. The   Ladies Auxiliary was also formed in March. A used 1938 International fire engine was purchased and was soon joined by a 1947 Ford. (Both trucks are shown in this photograph taken in Oct. 1956). Land to build a firehouse on Ellis Street was donated by the late John Selby. The building was completed by May 1956 and was formally dedicated on  October 29, 1956. During 2004, the building was totally renovated to serve as the department's formal Banquet Hall.

PRESENT
This modern three-bay drive-thru station was dedicated on September 30, 2000. During 2006, the department celebrated 50 years of dedicated service.  Currently, over 30 active volunteer members provide Fire & EMS services to residents of the greater Greenbackville area.  During 2007, over 200 calls for assistance were answered in both Virginia and Maryland.

Are you interested in becoming a Volunteer?

The Greenbackville Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., is always in need of volunteers. From Firefighter/EMT'S,
to assisting with fundraising & administrative duties, we need you to help us better serve our community.
Seriously interested individuals should visit the fire station, located at 1479 Stockton Avenue in
Greenbackville, to pick up an application. Simply return the completed membership application to the station
and someone from the department's review board will contact you. As long as everything checks out,
you are on your way to become a member of a fine volunteer organization.

Message from the Chief

The Greenbackville V.F.D. encourages the purchase and installation of a Knox-Box System for all residents and business owners in our first due area. This system provides a reliable and rapid method of safely accessing your residence or business to firefighters during an emergency when owners are unavailable to respond to an activated fire or EMS related alarm. For more information please contact the G.V.F.D.
